Light and reflection.
THE STADTCASINO BASEL
What is it about?
The Stadtcasino Basel is a concert hall steeped in tradition. It characterises the cultural landscape of the city and is part of the famous «cultural mile» on the Steinenberg. The Basel Symphony Orchestra, the Basel Chamber Orchestra and the Basel Sinfonietta perform here. The music hall from 1876 has 1500 seats and is internationally recognised as one of the best acoustic halls of its kind.

What exactly was the assignment?
The realisation of metal wall cladding as part of an overall architectural concept. As a basis, highly polished stainless steel mirror panels, 15 metres wide and 9 metres high, were installed over two floors on both sides of the foyer. The same was done in the basement. The resulting reflections of the canopy and other architectural details on the metal surfaces open up the space. Ceilings, walls and arches appear almost transparent in places. Seating niches with spy windows allow views into the foyer. The combination of different colours, surfaces and materials such as metal, wood, fabric and the red ornamental wallpaper create a unique spatial experience.
What was the particular challenge?
To realise the architectural firm's idea, we contributed our extensive expertise in design, material composition and surface treatment. The weight of the metal modules of up to 300 kilograms, which we installed at the desired location using a crane, was particularly challenging.
What was the result?
The matt and sometimes diffuse stainless steel surfaces are created by different types of polishing, emphasising or concealing the transitions and interacting with different materials, colours and shapes. This creates a fascinating spatial experience of light and reflection. These contrasts give the building an unmistakable ambience: Architecture in timeless perfection. It was a great pleasure for us to be involved in the realisation of the overall design for the Stadtcasino Basel.
