What is it about?
The Grand Hotel Les Trois Rois is a Basel legend: a place for guests from all over the world since 1681, directly on the Rhine and today one of the most renowned five-star hotels in Switzerland. Its classicist main building from 1844 and the elegant Beaux-Arts extension from 1902 tell of centuries of change, hospitality and history. Remodelled and developed time and again, the hotel still combines tradition, character and timeless elegance to create a unique experience.
What should be realised?
Morath was part of the extensive remodelling of the Grand Hotel Les Trois Rois in Basel. Under the direction of Herzog & de Meuron, an architectural project was created that combines historical substance with modern elegance. A high-quality, contemporary interior concept that preserves tradition while setting new design accents - from the ballroom to the presidential suite.
What was the particular challenge?
To realise the architectural firm's idea, we contributed our extensive expertise in design, material composition and surface treatment. The weight of the metal modules of up to 300 kilograms, which we installed at the desired location using a crane, was particularly challenging.
How did the cooperation go?
The collaboration with Herzog & de Meuron was characterised by a clear design vision, intensive coordination and precise implementation. Everyone involved - including Weidmann AG and Rosconi Systems AG - worked together closely and in a solution-orientated manner.
What was the particular challenge?
The combination of historical architecture, the highest design standards and technical perfection. The gloss level, material effect and depth of detail had to be precisely matched to the overall design and realised as a kind of metal wallpaper. Morath was responsible for the realisation of glass bead blasted and then gold PVD-coated stainless steel partitions. The laser-cut ornaments characterise the entire room design and are used for ventilation. The contract also included highly polished stainless steel work in several areas of the Grand Hotel: the ballroom, sanitary facilities, basement and metal-finished columns in the presidential suite and banqueting hall. The aim was to ensure consistency in the use of stainless steel in all design and building areas.
What was the result?
The result is an impressive interplay of tradition, aesthetics and modernity. The elegant metal surfaces set glamorous accents and contribute significantly to the atmosphere and quality of the newly designed building. An architectural jewel that combines historical substance with contemporary elegance at the highest level. Our highly polished stainless steel work in the ballroom, in the sanitary areas, in the basement and the gleaming metallic columns in the presidential suite contribute to the overall effect of this special building. Selected stainless steel elements were given a luxurious gold PVD coating, which sets warm accents and subtly enhances the feeling of space.
